3DS Max: Error Loading Plug-In DLL

3DS Max: Error Loading Plug-In DLL
When launching 3ds Max you receive an Error Loading Plug-in DLL dialog. The error states the mentalray.dlz file has failed to initialize:

Upon using 3ds Max to render with NVIDIA Mental Ray or Iray, neither are installed and do not appear for selection in the Render Setup drop-down list under Renderer.

Causes:

When installing 3ds Max with the Setup application (*.exe) file or installing NVIDIA’s separate Mental Ray plugin for the 2018 version, the Mental Ray files seem to be installed in the wrong folder or read incorrectly.

Solution:

Install the newest version of NVIDIA mental ray and IRay (3.14.1.4) for 3ds Max 2017.

Additionally if the issue persists:

  1. Copy all of the contents from Plugins\NVIDIA\Bin folder directly in the root directory: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max <version>. (Do not Cut the contents from the folder.)
  2. Start 3ds Max again and the error should not appear and load the render plugins.
