3DS Max: Won’t Launch After Installing Visual Framework Update

3DS Max: Won’t Launch After Installing Visual Framework Update
After installing the Microsoft Visual C++/.NET 4.7 Framework update and then 3ds Max 2017 Update 2, multiple versions of 3ds Max (2016-2018) no longer launch. The programs will start, then will exit shortly after the Welcome screen appears.

Causes:

3ds Max developers have seen conflicts between the Microsoft Visual C++/.NET 4.7 Framework update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, and 3ds Max 2017 Update 2. Problems with .NET 4.7 may also manifest themselves in other Autodesk products.

This issue has been logged with development as MAXX-37709.

Solution:

From the Windows Control Panel > Programs and Features > View Installed Updates, uninstall the .NET 4.7 update and revert to .NET 4.6.2.

The exact Windows Update number for the .NET 4.7 Framework is KB3186497.
