Autodesk Vault Error A selected file has exceeded the maximum size

Issue

You want to add a large file to the Vault. When you attempted to add a file larger than the default maximum file size (50 MB), the following error message was displayed:

Autodesk Vault:

A selected file has exceeded the maximum size. (Contact your server administrator)

Solution

There is a file size limit on individual files that are added to the Vault. The default file size limit is 50 MB. However, the default size may be modified, as desired, if larger file sizes are required.

The default file size limit was introduced for Autodesk® Vault 3. The same limitations apply in newer releases of Autodesk Vault and Autodesk Productstream™. You may need to increase the default limit setting for files migrated from previous versions of Autodesk Vault. However, be cautious if you plan to raise this file size limit substantially because this can affect overall performance.

Note: Because header information is sent with a file during the http request when being added to Vault or Productstream, the actual maximum size of the file is slightly less than the limit specified.

To change the file size limit

  1. Locate the web.configfile in one of the following folders, depending on the product and version you have installed.
    • For all newer versions of Vault
C:Program FilesAutodeskData Management Server XServerWebServices Note: Replace the “X” in the file path with the appropriate version number of Autodesk Data Management Server installed (4, 4.5, or 5 etc.).
  2. Create a backup copy of the web.config file.
  3. Open the web.config file with Microsoft® Notepad.
  4. Search for the string, “maxRequestLength”.
  5. The default value for the “maxRequestLength” string is 51200, which represents the current maximum file size limit.
  6. Modify this value, as desired.
Important! There are two instances of the maxRequestLength string in the web.config file. You need to change both of these strings to the same value.
  7. Save the file.
  8. Click Start menu (Windows) > Run.
  9. Locate the following file, depending on the product and version you have installed:
    • For Vault:
C:Program FilesAutodeskVault XExplorerConnectivity.Vault.Exe.Config Note: Replace the “X”s in the file paths with the version number of Vault  installed on the client machine.
  10. Repeat steps 2-5 for this file, making sure the value matches the new value for maxRequestLength used in step 5.
  11. Enter IISRESET at the Open prompt.

This will reset IIS, making the change effective. You do not need to restart your computer, but you do need to restart the Vault Explorer client before you can add your large files.
